Uncle Vanya

The professor's name is Aleksandr Vladimirovich Serebryakov. The title character is Ivan Petrovich Voynitsky, the brother of the professor's first wife, who has managed the family estate in the professor's absence with the assistance of Sonya, the professor's daughter from his first marriage. Vanya and his friend Astrov, the local doctor, both fall under the spell of Yelena (the professor's new wife), while bemoaning the ennui of their provincial existence; meanwhile, Sonya has unrequited feelings for Dr. Astrov. Matters are brought to a crisis when the professor announces his intention to sell the estate, Vanya and Sonya's home, with a view to investing the proceeds to achieve a higher income for himself and his wife.
